This weekend I went to Maine and Salem, Massachusetts, famously known for the Salem Witch Trials. We started our trip on Saturday morning. From Boston, we drove up to Portland, Maine, which was about a 2-hour drive. Portland is a really cute city. There were lots of small restaurants and shops. We bought a small magnet souvenir of a lighthouse painting from a street vendor. We walked by the harbor and through the cute little town.
For lunch, we ate at this cute little restaurant. We got poutine and a sandwich. Poutine is a Canadian dish, that I've typically eaten with my cousins from Canada. The dish consists of french fries, covered in gravy, bacon, and cheese! It's super yummy. I was surprised to find it in the US, but I guess Maine is as close to Canada as it gets.
About 30 minutes south of Portland is Cape Elizabeth. We went there next. Cape Elizabeth is this beautiful rocky shore that looks out to the Atlantic Ocean. What's the most interesting here is that the rocks look like tree bark. I actually thought it was tree bark for a while until I looked it up.
After Cape Elizabeth, we just drove along route 1 for about 4 hours. Our direction was towards the famous Acadia National Park. We decided to take route 1 instead of the high way because through more towns. We also saw more nature this way: changing leaves, the ocean, and marshes. We actually didn't end up reaching to Acadia National Park. It's supposed to be very beautiful with lots of cliffs, trees, and so on. But Sajal and I felt that we got a good sense of Maine, and it was also getting late. So we drove home to Boston.
On Sunday, we got up and went to the Cliff Walk. This was only an hour from Boston but was still in Maine. The Cliff Walks are closed right now because of COVID, but we still got to see houses on the edges of cliffs, with the waves crashing right below. When I think of Maine, I think of Cliffs and Rocky Shores. So I'm really glad that I got to see both things!
After Maine, we decided to get lunch in Boston. We went to an Italian Restaurant in the North End that was so good. We got Italian last weekend and were hungry for more. Check out my last blog if you want to learn more about Boston. After that, we went home for a little bit before going to Salem.
Our Salem trip was very impromptu. It was one of the things I wanted to go to in Massachusetts, but I had honestly forgotten about it until Saturday night. Sajal and I remembered and since our Sunday was looking light, we decided to go for it!
We didn't check for tickets or stuff to do until the next day. There's a walking tour that explains the history of witches and the Salem witch trial, there's a witch's house that you can go to, and there's a museum. Both of the witch's house and the walking tour were booked so we only went to the museum. If I could do it again, I would go to the witch's house and do the walking tour. The museum was really cool though. There were 2 exhibits that explained the whole history of the Salem Witch Trials. It was a very cool experience overall and very educational as well.
Salem itself was a really cool city to be in. I have never been to a city that loves Halloween as much as Salem. When we arrived so many people were wearing witch hats or dressed up as witches. There were Halloween decorations everywhere, including the restaurants and even city statues. There were so many stores selling witch wands, potions, as well as other witch items. There were also many Halloween themed stores in general as well as one that was dedicated to Harry Potter. The whole experience was very cool. If you love Halloween, you have to go to Salem!! After Salem, we came home and passed out haha.
