On August 3rd, Sajal and I moved into an apartment in Waikiki. Waikiki is a subsection of the city of Honolulu. It is the main tourist attraction of Honolulu with its beautiful beaches, amazing resturaunts, and fun tourist activities. Waikiki itself is a city within a city. There are tall skyscrapers all around, many of them being condos and hotels. It really feels like living in New York while being in 85-degree weather right next to the beach. From our apartment, we can see the beautiful ocean. We are one block away from the beach and our rent is fairly inexpensive. Here are the many reasons why you should vacation in Waikiki.
The Beach
Waikiki Beach is one of the most renowned beaches in the world. It's a very long stretch of beach that has is a beautiful blue color and is crystal clear. The beach has many different aspects to it. Some parts have a wall, creating a pool that is perfect for little kids. Some parts have more waves that are perfect for surfing. We can see people surfing in the water from the first speck of sunshine till sunset. Some parts of the beach have softer waves that are just fun to lay around and swim in all day. Waikiki beach even has a wall that people jump off into the water too as well. I love staring out into the water watching the boats, surfers, and swimmers.
City Life
The best part of Waikiki for Sajal and I has just been city life. We love to walk around see all the resturaunts, people, and buildings. Hawaii is so beautiful that we never get tired of the ocean view either. In Makaha, there was no place to really just walk around. Here, Sajal and I take 1-2 hour walks every day! Sajal even runs alongside the beach. We love being closer to people and life, especially during quarantine when everything seems so isolated. Waikiki is also very close to Pearl Harbor and the airport. Most of the highways on Oahu also lead to Waikiki so it's very easy to go anywhere else on the island.
Stores and Shopping
Being near the city is also really nice because of all of the stores. My guitar string broke, and I was easily able to walk to a store and purchase a new string. I've also started going to the library, allowing me to read more. The library is so close to my house. There are also amazing shops here. There's Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Prada, Chanel, Jimmy Choo, etc. I had heard of all of these brands before, but I had never seen their actual stores. I was amazed to see these luxurious stores all in one place.
Great Variety in Dining Options
Sajal and I also have been eating out so much. The food here is so good. We've had Udon, Dumplings, Burgers, Pizza, Empanadas, Acai Bowls, Smoothies, Malasadas (fried dumplings), Roasted Chicken, Ribs, Sliders, Fried Chicken Sandwiches, Bubble Tea, Hula Hula, Hula Pie and so much more. We've never once complained about the food or the quantity. The best part about Waikiki is the rooftop resturaunts. There are many restaurants that are on the 2nd or 3rd floor of hotels. These resturaunts are open-air and give you this amazing view of the water. They often have live bands and just an amazing atmosphere. Two of the ones that Sajal and I have visited are called Deck and Tiki's Grill. They both have amazing vibes and food. There are also many grocery stores- Costco, Walmart, Target, Safeway, Walgreens, and Foodland. Sajal and I go to grocery stores regularly without the concern of when the bus was coming. Speaking of the bus...
Bus System Is Amazing
I thought that the bus system was great in Makaha, but in Waikiki, the bus comes at least once every 5 minutes. These busses can take you all over the island and a full-day pass is only $5.50. Sajal and I have traveled to China town, downtown Honolulu, Ala Moana, and the east side of Waikiki. My friend even took the bus to North Shore. If you don't want to take the bus, there are so many places close by that will allow you to rent a car for ~$80 a day or moped for ~$50 a day.
Those are the many reasons why I think you should vacation in Waikiki. This amazing city will forever have a piece of my heart!
